San Diego, California (February 26, 2022) – The National Association for Continence had the honor of naming Dr. Toby Chai as the most recent recipient of the Rodney Appell Continence Care Champion Award during SUFU winter meeting.

San Diego, California (February 26, 2022) – The National Association for Continence had the honor of naming Dr. Toby Chai as the most recent recipient of the Rodney Appell Continence Care Champion Award during SUFU winter meeting.

The SUFU winter meeting was held with the objective of improving the art and science of Urology through basic and applied clinical research in urodynamics and neurourology, voiding function and dysfunction, female urology and pelvic floor dysfunction, and to disseminate and teach these concepts. The Society fosters interdisciplinary dialogue and communication, promotion of the development of young scientists, and the development of scientific, educational, and professional activities through publications.

Toby C. Chai, MD, is Chief of Urology at Boston Medical Center, and Professor and Chair of the Department of Urology at Boston University School of Medicine. He also serves as President of Boston University Medical Center Urologists, Inc. since 2019.

Previously, Dr. Chai was a Professor of Urology and Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at Yale University School of Medicine. He served as Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Urology and Co-Director of the Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery Program at Yale New Haven Hospital. Prior to this, he held the John D. Young Professorship in Urology at University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Dr. Chai completed his medical degree at Indiana University School of Medicine, his urology residency at University of Michigan Medical Center, and a fellowship at University of Virginia

He has published 150 papers, reviews, and medical texts. He serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of Physiology – Renal and as an Associate Editor for Journal of Urology. His peers have recognized his significant contributions to the field by honoring him with the American Urological Association (AUA) 2013 Victor A. Politano Award for outstanding work in treatment of urinary incontinence and innovations in bladder research, the 2022 AUA Distinguished Service Award for exemplary contributions to the science of urology and advocacy for urological research, the Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine & Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU) 2015 Distinguished Service Award for outstanding contributions to urodynamics, female urology and voiding dysfunction, and exemplary service to the Society and the SUFU 2005 Paul Zimskind Award for continuing excellence and leadership in field of voiding dysfunction.

Steven G. Gregg, Ph.D., Executive Director for the National Association for Continence presented Dr. Chai the award on behalf of the organization. “We were thrilled to honor Dr. Chai for his outstanding leadership in the field of urology. He was more than deserving of this honor and we are grateful for the advances he has made and continues to make to help the over 80 million people impacted by bowel and bladder disorders. We hear every day from patients about the struggles they endure to find great care and live quality lives. Dr. Chai’s commitment to these patients and to training of colleagues is an incredible asset to the field, said Dr. Gregg. “We look forward to seeing his continued contributions.”
