J. CHRISTIAN WINTERS, MD, FACS AWARDED FOR EXCEPTIONAL CONTINENCE CARE

February 26, 2016 (CHARLESTON, SC)—J. Christian Winters, MD was recognized for his outstanding treatment of patients by The National Association For Continence (NAFC). Dr. Winters was presented the Rodney Appell Continence Care Champion Award at the Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine and Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU) winter meeting in New Orleans, LA on Friday, February 26, 2016. This award was sponsored by Astellas Pharma US, Inc., a pharmaceutical company dedicated to changing tomorrow by improving the health of people around the world through innovative and reliable pharmaceutical products.

J. Christian Winters MD, is currently the H. Eustis Reily Professor of Urology and Gynecology and Chairman of the Department of Urology at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. He also serves as director of the LSU Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery fellowship.

Dr. Winters is a native of New Orleans and earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans. He completed his urology residency in the combined LSU / Ochsner program, where he served as Chief Resident and Assistant Clinical Director at Charity Hospital. He then completed a fellowship in female urology and voiding dysfunction at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio in 1995. He returned to LSU in 1997. He was appointed Program Director of the Ochsner / LSU Urology Residency Program in 2005, and was recognized by the AUA as Teacher of the Year in 2009 for these efforts.

Dr. Winters is the immediate past President of the American Urological Association, the Society for Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine and Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU), a member of The American Urologic Association (AUA). In addition, he serves on the Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Committee as well as the Practice Management Committee of the AUA. Through these roles, he has frequently consulted in the area of voiding dysfunction and female urology. Dr. Winters has also served on the Executive Committee of the Southeastern Section of the AUA and as President of the Louisiana State Urologic Society.

Donna Deng, MD, Chairman of the NAFC Board stated that, “It is an extreme pleasure for me to be able to recognize Dr. Winters as the latest recipient of the Rodney Appell Continence Care Champion Award and only fitting that we recognize Dr. Winters in his hometown of New Orleans.  Over the years, Dr. Winters has made significant contributions to the field of Urology as a physician, educator, researcher, and author. His recognition as AUA Teacher of the Year in 2009 is proof of his dedication and ongoing commitment to the patient care in the field of continence care.”

Established in 2000 to recognize health care providers who serve as role models to others for outstanding contributions in research, education and clinical practice, NAFC’s Rodney Appell Continence Care Champion Award raises awareness among a variety of professional societies and elevates the importance of addressing incontinence.
